It has been shown to inhibit glutamic dehydrogenase in human liver cells and overlaps with nitro groups on purines in the viral genome. 6-Amino-5-nitrouracil also interacts with uridine phosphorylase, which is an enzyme that converts uridine into cytosine, and this inhibition prevents DNA synthesis. The nitro group on 6-amino-5-nitrouracil can be oxidized by halogens to form a reactive oxygen species, which destroys the viral ribonucleic acid (RNA).
