5-Amino-6-methylbenzimidazolone is a synthetic chemical that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. 5-Amino-6-methylbenzimidazolone is hydrolyzed by hydrochloric acid or organic solvents to produce 4,5-diamino-2,6-dimethylphenazine and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol. These intermediates can be further processed to produce various drugs such as antibiotics and antihistamines. 5-Amino-6-methylbenzimidazolone has been shown to be biodegradable and can be degraded through wastewater treatment systems. The degradation process produces chloride ions and hydrogen gas, which are then mineralized into carbon dioxide and water.
