2-Amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water. It has a hydroxyl group and two nitrogen atoms, which are essential for its chemical stability. The optimum concentration of AMP is 0.1 M, at which it causes the fastest reaction rate with an enzyme. In human serum, this compound reacts with glycol ethers to form 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol hemiacetal acetals, which can be detected by analytical methods such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. AMP has been shown to bind to the active site of enzymes classified under EC number 1.14.16 and EC number 1.14.17, inhibiting their activity in a reversible manner. The mechanism for this inhibition is still unclear but may involve hydrogen bonding or electrostatic interactions between the enzyme and substrate molecules or a change in conformational states of the enzyme molecule
