2-Amino-4-nitrobenzoic acid is a copper chelator, which prevents the formation of the copper complexes that are necessary for the production of reactive oxygen species. It has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in mice and human cervical carcinoma cells. 2-Amino-4-nitrobenzoic acid also decreases protein synthesis by disrupting the hydrogen bond between amine groups in amino acids and carboxylate groups on ribosomes. This leads to inhibition of the production of proteins vital for cell division. 2-Amino-4-nitrobenzoic acid is excreted in urine as an N-oxide metabolite.
