ACTH is a polypeptide hormone that regulates the release of cortisol from the adrenal cortex. ACTH (18-39) is a fragment of ACTH which binds to the glucocorticoid receptor with high affinity. The carboxy terminal sequence of ACTH (18-39) is identical to that of human ACTH and can be used as an immunogen to produce monoclonal antibodies against ACTH. The monoclonal antibodies can then be used in prognostic studies for patients with congestive heart failure, diabetic neuropathy, or k562 cells. ACTH (18-39) has an optimum pH level of 7.0 and can bind to cellular receptors at physiological concentrations. It also has a molecular weight of 4,000 Daltons and is soluble in trifluoroacetic acid and hydrogen fluoride, but not in water or methanol.
