5-Amino-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid hydrochloride is a tetrapeptide that inhibits the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme. It binds to the active site of the enzyme, which prevents it from catalyzing the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonic acid. This leads to a decrease in cholesterol synthesis and an increase in LDL receptor expression on cell membranes. 5-Amino-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid hydrochloride has been shown to reduce lipid levels in animal models of dyslipidemia, as well as humans with coronary heart disease. The drug also has an affinity for immobilized metal ions, such as nickel and copper, which may be used in solid phase synthesis.
