4-(4-Aminophenyl)butyric acid (ABBA) is a synthetic derivative of heroin that has been shown to have potent antitumor activity. ABBA has a molecular weight of 242.24 and a chemical formula of C9H12N2O2. It is soluble in water, methanol, ethanol, or dimethylformamide. The anti-tumor mechanism appears to be related to the inhibition of amine metabolism by inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential and decreasing cellular amine concentrations. This drug also has potent antimicrobial properties as well as a strong affinity for fatty acids and hydroxyl groups on cell surfaces that lead to its high membrane permeability.
