4-Amino-pyrimidine-5-carbonitrile is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting the synthesis of proteins. It binds to the amino group of the enzyme and prevents formation of the enzyme's active site. 4-Aminopyrimidine-5-carbonitrile has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis. This drug also exhibits antiinflammatory properties through its inhibition of inflammatory cytokines and enzymes such as lipoxygenase. The drug is also inactive against Gram negative bacteria such as E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Haemophilus influenzae.
4-Aminopyrimidine-5-carbonitrile is a heterocycle with two tautomers that are in equilibrium in solution. The reaction time for these tautomeric forms is
