4-(Aminomethyl)benzene-1,3-diol hydrochloride is a hydroxyl compound that is used as an inhibitor in wastewater treatment. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the hydroxyl group on the mitochondrial membrane potential. This prevents ATP production and cell membrane integrity, leading to cell death. 4-(Aminomethyl)benzene-1,3-diol hydrochloride has been shown to be effective at low concentrations against phenolic acid and dopamine oxidation. The inhibition of dopamine oxidation increases the release of monoamine neurotransmitters, which may have an antidepressant effect.
