1-Acetyl-5-bromo-1H-indole-2,3-dione is a chemical compound that is used as an antiviral agent. It inhibits the transcription of viral RNA by binding to the enzyme RNA polymerase and preventing it from transcribing the virus's genome. The compound has been shown to be effective against HIV type 1 in tissue culture, and has also been found to inhibit some strains of influenza virus. 1-Acetyl-5-bromo-1H-indole-2,3-dione has been shown to have neurotoxic effects in animal studies, which are thought to be due to its ability to chelate copper ions and deplete copper in the brain.
