It has been shown to increase the efficiency of gene transfer, especially when optimized with other factors such as polymeric materials. 2-[(2-Aminoethyl)(methyl)amino]ethanol is synthesized by reacting ethylene diamine and ethanolamine. The molecular weight, which ranges from 200 to 300 grams per mole, is dependent on the degree of polymerization. 2-[(2-Aminoethyl)(methyl)amino]ethanol has been shown to be biodegradable and can be broken down by hydrolysis.
