6-Amino-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidin-4-ol (6AP) is a mitochondrial superoxide scavenger and anti-inflammatory agent that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. 6AP also inhibits microglial activation, which is linked to the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The drug was also found to be effective in reducing amyloid protein plaques in mice by preventing its polymerization. 6AP is an inhibitor of DNA binding and inhibits dna synthesis by binding to the primer site of the primer extension reaction. This compound has been shown to have low potency and a low bioavailability due to its hydrophilic properties.
