5-Acetyl-2,3-dihydrobenzo(B)furan is a tetrahydrofuran that is used for the preparation of acetic anhydride. 5-Acetyl-2,3-dihydrobenzo(B)furan reacts with hydrochloric acid to form acetyl chloride and hydrogen gas. Acetic anhydride is then formed by acetylation of nitrobenzene in the presence of aluminium chloride or magnesium chloride. 5-Acetyl-2,3-dihydrobenzo(B)furan also catalyzes the transfer of acetate groups from acetonitrile to chloride ion. Elemental analysis has shown that 5-acetyl-2,3-dihydrobenzo(B)furan contains 0.07% chlorine and 0.03% aluminium on a dry basis. The compound is anhydrous and contains no detectable water or volatile
