(S)-2-Amino-3-(carboxyformamido)propanoic acid (ACPA) is a neurotransmitter that binds to glutamate receptors. It has excitatory effects and causes an increase in the concentration of intracellular calcium ions. ACPA is found in ginseng, which has been shown to have physiological effects on animals. ACPA is also present in cerebellar granule cells and can be used as a marker for this type of cell. Liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection has been used to measure ACPA levels in brain tissue samples from humans and mice.
