2-Acetylphenanthrene is a yellow solid that can be prepared by reacting acetylene with carbon disulphide in the presence of a catalyst. This process is known as the Acetylation reaction or the Friedel-Crafts reaction. 2-Acetylphenanthrene has been shown to have chiral properties, which can be utilized for the production of polymers such as polyacetylene. The acetyl group is transferred to a carbanion, which is then oxidized to form a disulphide. This process can also be used for synthesizing other organic compounds, such as methyl ketones and x-ray crystallography. 2-Acetylphenanthrene has also been used in solvents and copolymerization reactions.
