4-Amino-5-iodopyrimidine is a potential drug candidate for the development of antiviral agents against Ebola virus, MERS-CoV, and other viruses. It inhibits viral RNA replication by binding to an enzyme that is essential for the synthesis of viral RNA. The compound has also been shown to inhibit the replication of coronavirus and influenza virus in studies with mice. 4-Amino-5-iodopyrimidine binds to the active site of the enzyme ribonuclease H (RNase H) and blocks its activity, thereby inhibiting rna synthesis. 4-Amino-5-iodopyrimidine binds to a different site than existing antiviral drugs such as ribavirin, thus conferring resistance to these agents.
