(S)-3-Amino-4-methylpentanoic acid is an amide of cobalamin. It is a cofactor for the enzyme methylmalonyl-CoA mutase, which catalyzes the conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA. This reaction is essential for the metabolism of odd chain fatty acids and amino acids in humans. (S)-3-Amino-4-methylpentanoic acid can be synthesized from adenosylcobalamin in vitro by incubating with acetic acid, methanol, and isocaproic acid in a chloroform solution under acidic conditions. The synthesis proceeds via an asymmetric process that produces only one enantiomer of (S)-3-amino-4-methylpentanoic acid. The synthesis also produces a byproduct, α-(2'-hydroxyisocaproyl)cobalamin, which can be used as
