2-Amino-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid (HPA) is a metabolite of tryptophan and is involved in the regulation of tissue development. HPA has been shown to be a nutrient for cells and regulates cellular processes, such as protein synthesis. Analysis of mirnas has revealed that it is a putative target for cancer treatment, especially leukemia. HPA may also have an effect on animals, where it has been shown to regulate gene expression in tissues such as the brain and liver. The effects of HPA on plants are less clear, but with some evidence that it may regulate plant growth in response to abiotic stress.
