Tranexamic acid is a synthetic, acidic compound that is used as an antifibrinolytic medication. It prevents the breakdown of blood clots and has been shown to be effective in the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding and other conditions involving excessive bleeding. Tranexamic acid is the active ingredient in China's national pharmacopeia. The drug can be prepared by reacting 4-(acetamidomethyl)benzoic acid with ethanol in water, and hydrogenating the resulting solution to yield tranexamic acid. The eluate is then treated with p-toluenesulfonic acid to yield tranexamic acid. The transformation of 4-(acetamidomethyl)benzoic acid into tranexamic acid involves two steps: reduction and sulfonation.
