4-Aminobutanenitrile hydrochloride is a white crystalline powder that can be dissolved in water. It is a reaction mixture of 4-aminobutyric acid and hydrochloric acid, which reacts to form anhydrous hydrochloric acid. The synthesis of the product occurs by hydrolysis, with the addition of hydrochloric acid to 4-aminobutyric acid. Hydrochloric acid reacts with 4-aminobutyric acid to produce aminobutanenitrile and hydrogen chloride gas. The reaction produces an effervescent solution with a pH of 3.5 or less.
