Adrafinil is a prodrug of modafinil, which is a central nervous system stimulant. Adrafinil inhibits the activity of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) and increases the levels of cGMP, which leads to relaxation of smooth muscle tissue in the corpus cavernosum. It also has been shown to increase dopamine levels in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake by neurons. Adrafinil is used as an adjuvant therapy for congestive heart failure, Parkinson's disease, and narcolepsy. It has been shown that adrafinil can cause cutaneous lesions in animals that are sensitive to sodium citrate.
