Aflatoxin B2 is a potent hepatocarcinogen and immunosuppressant that inhibits energy metabolism. Aflatoxin B2 is found in the fungus Aspergillus flavus, which contaminates food sources such as peanuts, corn, and cottonseed. Aflatoxin B2 has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential and induce liver lesions in vivo. Aflatoxin B2 also induces dopamine release from the striatum of mice, leading to abnormal behavior. This toxin binds to proteins in the mitochondria, creating a matrix effect that inhibits ATP production. The binding of this toxin to cellular proteins inhibits enzyme activity by altering their conformation and preventing them from interacting with their substrates or cofactors.
