4-Amino-1-tert-butyl-3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine (ABT) is a new anticancer drug that inhibits the growth of prostate cancer cells. ABT binds to response elements in the promoter region of genes, blocking transcription and causing cancer cells to undergo apoptosis. This compound has also been shown to inhibit the proliferation of human liver cells. The cytotoxic effects of ABT were investigated using cellular physiology and molecular modeling studies. ABT showed strong cytotoxicity against a number of human cancer cell lines, including breast, leukemia, colon, lung and prostate cancers. It also inhibited the growth of animal models for congestive heart failure. The IC50 values for these compounds are in the low micromolar range with MTT assay data suggesting that ABT is more potent than erythromycin A.
