Aluminum phenoxide is a heterogeneous catalyst that can be used to synthesize hydroxy-functionalized molecules. It was first used as a catalyst in the oxidation of diphenyl ethers, which yielded aldehydes and ketones with high yields. Aluminum phenoxide catalyzes the reaction by oxidizing the substrate at one end of the molecule, generating an hydroxyl group on the other end. This type of reaction has been shown to produce a variety of aromatic products with high yield. The use of this catalyst is limited by its reactivity towards organic solvents, making it difficult to work with in organic chemistry.
