- 5-Amino-thiazolo[4,5-d]pyrimidine-2,7-diol
Ganciclovir is an antiviral drug that inhibits the synthesis of DNA, which is required for viral replication. It is effective against a number of viruses, including cytomegalovirus and herpesviruses. Ganciclovir binds to the enzyme thymidine kinase, which converts ganciclovir into the active form, 5-amino-2',3'-dideoxycytidine triphosphate (5-ADCTP). This active form prevents DNA synthesis by inhibiting the function of DNA polymerase. Ganciclovir also has in vitro antiviral activity against murine leukemia virus type II (MLV-II) and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). The drug is not active against human T cell lymphotrophic virus type I (HTLV-I), influenza A virus type A/PR/8/34 (PR8), or influenza B virus type B/Brisbane/
