Ammonium hexachloroosmate is a coordination complex of the metal osmium with six chlorides. It is a luminescent probe that can be used for detection of inorganic acids and other analytical methods. Ammonium hexachloroosmate has been found to have redox potentials that are similar to those of the corresponding free acid, which is an advantage for applications involving oxidation-reduction reactions. The nitrogen atoms in ammonium hexachloroosmate play an important role in its binding with organic compounds and may allow it to be used as a model complex for the study of ligand binding by metal ions.
