Azumolene sodium salt is a cytosolic calcium (Ca2+) ionophore that inhibits the accumulation of Ca2+ in the sarcoplasmic reticulum by binding to the intracellular Ca2+ channel. This drug has been shown to be potent inducers of cytosolic Ca2+, and can be used for diagnosis of cardiac disease. Azumolene sodium salt also binds to the ryanodine receptor and blocks its activation, which prevents an influx of Ca2+ into the cell. It has been shown to have a detergent-like effect on fatty acids, which may account for its ability to inhibit fatty acid-induced cytosolic Ca2+ accumulation.
