Amicycline is a diagnostic agent that is used to identify the influenza virus. It binds to the viral RNA and causes it to be degraded in an acid environment, which prevents its replication. Amicycline has also been shown to bind to cellular DNA and viruses, targeting them for degradation. This drug has been shown to have anti-cancer properties by inhibiting the growth of tumor cells and blocking the release of growth factors from cells. Amicycline is not active against bacteria or fungi, but can be used as a diagnostic agent for these organisms. Amicycline works by binding with affinity ligands on the surface of target tissue, such as cancer cells or bacterial cells. Structural analysis suggests that amicycline binds with a receptor on the surface of target tissue and blocks it from receiving signals from other cells in order to inhibit cell division.
