4-Amino-5-imidazolecarboxamide hydrochloride is a drug that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of acute subarachnoid hemorrhage. It is an analog of adenosine, which prevents the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by inhibiting the enzyme ATP synthase. 4-Amino-5-imidazolecarboxamide hydrochloride has also been shown to have a neuroprotective effect in animal models of brain injury. The drug has been found to be safe and well tolerated in clinical trials for patients with congestive heart failure. 4-Amino-5-imidazolecarboxamide hydrochloride binds to mitochondrial cytochrome, which regulates apoptosis, leading to cell death.
