Angelicain is a modulator that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. It has been isolated from Cimicifuga foetida, a plant in the family Ranunculaceae. Angelicain has been shown to inhibit cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes, which are responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Angelicain also inhibits the action of histamine and serotonin on cells in culture. The structure of angelicain is similar to that of cholesterol, which may explain its ability to serve as a precursor for cholesterol biosynthesis.
