Albumin solution for injection is a sterile solution of human serum albumin in water for injection. The albumin solution is used as a volume expander or blood substitute during surgery. Human serum albumin solution has been shown to be effective in cardiac surgery, and has been shown to reduce postoperative pulmonary complications such as atelectasis, pneumonia, and respiratory failure. In vivo experiments have shown that albumin infusion reduces the size of infarcted heart muscle and improves cardiac function. Hydrogen fluoride exposure can cause damage to the kidneys, so it should not be administered intravenously in patients with pre-existing renal dysfunction.
