- 4-(Allyloxy)Phenol
- Phenol, 4-(2-Propen-1-Yloxy)-
4-Allyloxyphenol is a molecule that has antimicrobial properties. It is used in the inhibition of nitrification and denitrification at the water surface and in the prevention of biofilm formation. 4-Allyloxyphenol binds to bacterial protein data, which prevents the binding of amino acids to form proteins. This leads to a decrease in cellular activity because protein synthesis is inhibited, with a subsequent increase in cell death. 4-Allyloxyphenol has been shown to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The mechanism of action for this drug is not yet fully understood but it may involve nucleophilic attack by an amide group on the nitro group of nitroaromatic compounds. 4-Allyloxyphenol has also been shown to react with uv light, which may be responsible for its antimicrobial effects.
