N-Acetyl-5-acetoxytryptamine is a serotonin precursor that can be used as a label for the study of serotonin. It has been shown to be able to cross the blood-brain barrier in mammals and has been found in human urine, suggesting that it may have a physiological function. The synthesis of 5-HTP can be achieved by incubating l-amino acid with 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP) and the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. This reaction produces N-acetylserotonin, which is then decarboxylated to produce N-acetylserotonin.
