4-Aminophenol is a phenolic compound that can be obtained by the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol. It has been used as a chemical intermediate and dye intermediate, but it has also been used to treat infectious diseases. 4-Aminophenol is an inhibitor of the enzyme fructan alpha-1,4-glucosidase and has been shown to inhibit the growth of many bacteria. This drug also inhibits human serum fructan alpha-1,4-glucosidase in vitro. 4-Aminophenol has been shown to be effective against cancer cells in some animal models and may have potential for treating cancer in humans. The drug is currently being studied for its ability to kill cancer cells using a chemiluminescent reaction with fatty acids as an electron acceptor.
