It is a synthetic, aminobenzonitrile derivative that binds to the viral RNA polymerase and prevents the synthesis of new virus particles. 4-Amino-3-methylbenzonitrile has been shown to inhibit the growth of some strains of coxsackievirus, although it is less effective against other strains and viruses. 4-Amino-3-methylbenzonitrile inhibits the synthesis of viral proteins by binding to the viral RNA polymerase. This prevents viral transcription and replication, which leads to cell death.
