1-Adamantyl bromomethyl ketone (ABK) is a radical scavenger that has been shown to have potent inhibitory activity against cancer cells. ABK is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which prevents the oxidation of glutathione, thereby reducing oxidative stress. ABK also has strong antimicrobial properties and can be used as an alternative to antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infections. ABK has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in animal models, and is effective at inhibiting both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant cancer cells. This compound contains a carbonyl group that may contribute to its antioxidant properties by donating electrons during the process of redox cycling.
