2-Amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo[5,4-h]quinoxaline is a heterocyclic amine that is produced by the cooking of certain meats. It has been shown to be mutagenic and mutagenicity in S. typhimurium strains TA98 and TA100. 2-Amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo[5,4-h]quinoxaline has also been shown to induce DNA strand breaks in uv spectrum and induce creatine kinase in Salmonella typhimurium. The x-ray crystallography of 2-amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo[5,4-(h)quinoxalin-4yl]methanol revealed that it binds to threonine residues on the surface of the protein which could lead to its toxicity.
