It is the cyclic form of adenosine with a phosphite ester group at the 2' position on the ribose sugar moiety. FEN has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of nerve and muscle phosphodiesterase activity, which leads to an accumulation of cAMP in cells. It also has substitutable properties for ligand binding sites and can be used as a pesticide or herbicide.
