N-(3-Aminopropyl)-2,2-difluorobutane-1,4-diamine (DFPBA) is a novel aminopropyl derivative of the anti-tumor agent difluorobutane. It has been shown to inhibit spermine synthase and increase the production of polyamines, which have been shown to be involved in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. DFPBA inhibits spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase, an enzyme that catalyzes the acetylation of spermidine and spermine, leading to a decrease in their levels. This results in a decrease in cellular viability and an increase in apoptosis. The uptake mechanism for DFPBA is not well understood; however, it may be due to its amine group which allows it to cross the cell membrane by passive diffusion or active transport mechanisms.
