27-Hydroxymangiferonic acid is a constituent of propolis, which is a resinous material that bees use to seal gaps in the hive. This compound has been shown to have anti-helminthic and anti-inflammatory properties. 27-Hydroxymangiferonic acid inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin H2 (PGH2). The acidic nature of this compound may be due to its ability to inhibit the formation of fatty acids. 27-Hydroxymangiferonic acid also prevents the release of choline from phospholipids by blocking phospholipase A2 activity. The endogenous nature of this compound may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of phosphatidylcholine from phosphatidylethanolamine.
