Biphenyl sodium complex solution is a liquid that is used as an analytical reagent in the determination of redox potential. It has been shown to be effective in the detection of perfluorinated compounds and electron-donating substances. The biphenyl sodium complex solution is prepared by the reaction of biphenyl with sodium hydroxide in hydrochloric acid. The mechanism of this reaction is not well understood, but it can be assumed that there are two possible reactions: oxidation or reduction. This product has been shown to be toxic to animals at high doses and may cause cancer and birth defects at lower doses.
