Ethyltrimethoxysilane is a reactive organosilicon compound that is used as a catalyst in chemical reactions and as a precursor in organic synthesis. It has been shown to be useful in the production of polymers, plastics, and coatings. Ethyltrimethoxysilane also has been found to have an effect on blood pressure by reducing the rate of transport of sodium ions across the cell membrane. This may be due to its hydroxyl group or reactive functional group, which may lead to cross-linking with other molecules or formation of hydrogen bonds with water molecules. The thermal expansion coefficient of ethyltrimethoxysilane is higher than that of silicon dioxide so it can be used as an insulator for applications such as semiconductor devices. Ethyltrimethoxysilane is soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons and monocarboxylic acids and reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form silicofluoride compounds.
