3-(4-Methyl-1-piperazinylmethyl)indole (BZP) is an antagonist that binds to the serotonin 5-HT6 receptor and blocks its activation. BZP has been shown to be effective in the treatment of dementia, psychosis, depression, and hyperactivity. It also exhibits cognition enhancing properties. BZP is a prodrug that is metabolized into its active form by hydrolysis of its ester linkage by esterases or glucuronidases. The drug has been shown to be highly toxic in animal studies and should not be used for long periods of time. The drug may also have carcinogenic effects on humans, as it induces cancerous changes in cells grown in culture.
