- Butyraldehyde, dibutyl acetal
Butyraldehyde dibutyl acetal is a reactive compound that has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of V. anguillarum in a reaction solution containing an oxidation catalyst. The inhibition of V. anguillarum is due to the formation of a methyl ester-butyraldehyde dibutyl acetal complex, which inhibits fatty acid synthesis by binding to the enzyme acyl-CoA synthase. This compound can be synthesized from butanol and dibutyl chloride in a nonpolar solvent such as hexane, followed by isolation by chromatography on silica gel with chloroform or ethyl acetate as an eluent. Butyraldehyde dibutyl acetal can also be prepared from butanol and hydrogen chloride in hydrochloric acid using methyl ethyl ketone as a solvent.
