Bromothymol blue sodium salt is a dye that is used in analytical chemistry to detect the presence of proteins. It reacts with phosphatase enzymes, which are present in many cells and tissues such as the pancreas and liver. The enzyme cleaves the hydrogen bonds between bromothymol blue and the protein, releasing a blue-colored complex. Bromothymol blue sodium salt can be used to diagnose diseases such as vitamin B12 deficiency by staining sections of biological samples.
