Benzaldehyde is an organic compound with the molecular formula CH3COCH2CHO. It is a chiral molecule that can exist in two forms, depending on the relative configuration of the hydroxyl group. Benzaldehyde is used as a reagent for the preparation of other chemicals and pharmaceuticals. It has shown genotoxic effects in bacteria and is mutagenic to mammalian cells.
