3-Bromo-2-nitrotoluene is a divalent, synthetic nitrophenyl compound that has been used as a feedstock for the production of nitro compounds and solvents. 3-Bromo-2-nitrotoluene is converted to 3-bromo-2,4,6 trinitrotoluene (3 BNT) by reaction with concentrated hydrofluoric acid. The reactions are exothermic, producing a yellow liquid with a boiling point of 145 degrees Celsius at 760 mmHg. 3 BNT is used in the production of polyelectrolytes for use in water treatment and as an intermediate in the synthesis of carbonyl compounds. It can also be used as an organic solvent or monomer in the production of nitro compounds and solvents. Nitronium ions formed from 3 BNT have been shown to react with hydroxyl groups on polymers to produce stable covalent
