N-Butyl isothiocyanate (NBITC) is an isothiocyanate that has been shown to have a synergic effect with other drugs in the treatment of hepatic impairment. It also has been shown to have a protective effect on diabetic neuropathy and bowel disease, and can be used as a fluorescence probe for the detection of heavy metals. NBITC has been found to reduce inflammation in experimental models of inflammatory bowel disease. This agent has also demonstrated insecticidal properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit lipid biosynthesis and protein synthesis by binding to the mitochondrial enzyme acetyl-CoA synthase.
