N-Benzyl-2-cyanoacetamide is a pyrimidine derivative that is used as an antibacterial agent. It is synthesized from 2,4-dichloro-N-(2-chloroethyl)benzamide and 2-aminoacetonitrile in two steps. The first step involves the addition of thiourea to the chlorobenzene ring followed by a condensation with 2,4-dichloropiperidine. The second step involves the formation of the N-benzyl group by reaction with methyl amine hydrochloride. This compound has been shown to be effective against gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium.
