Benzyl butyrate is a chiral compound that is used as an antimicrobial agent in detergent compositions. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by inhibiting fatty acid and glycol ethers. This product also inhibits the activity of enzymes such as hydroxyl group and aminoglycoside-3'-phosphotransferase, which are involved in the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. Benzyl butyrate may be used to prevent or treat microbial infections caused by bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
